Incipit: Avanti, scimmioni! Volete vivere in eterno?

Kitaba yorum yapmaya gerek duymuyorum. Biz kim miyiz? Jul 03, Mat rated it really liked it Shelves: This is once again another superb novel from the master - John Fante. I'm starting to think that this guy is one of the best modern American novelists, if not the best.

Very powerful.

Some people criticized this work because Fante's writing is too 'young' or 'immature' here. To some degree, this charge is valid but to my mind, this was not at all unnatural for me considering that the main protagonist is a young boy coming of age, dreaming of being a professional baseball player.

Acta neophilologica

Speaking of basebal This is once again another superb novel from the master - John Fante. Speaking of baseball, this book reminded me, funnily enough of something Tom Waits once said.

In an early interview when Waits was just starting to come into the spotlight in the earely s, he said that "now everyone wants to be a rock 'n roll star, not a baseball player" implying that once upon a time for example in Fante's heyday that was one of the biggest dreams a young American boy would aspire for.

To some degree, this is still the case. Anyway, this is a nice short pithy novel about a boy who comes from a poor Italian family, whose mother lead the life of the good old patient saint, praying for the family and for her philandering husband, the son of the family around which the whole plot spins , the son's best friend who is also obsessed with running away to play baseball in the Major Leagues, and the son's father, about whom he has complex feelings.

On the one hand, he feels sympathy for him and we detect some stirrings of pride for his father who, as the town bricklaver, has paved and created beautiful monuments all over the city. However, his drunken behavior and infidelity to their mother create a complex psychological wedge between father and son.

The writing is beautifully lucid, clear, honest, gut-wrenchingly real and powerful but I detect that this is not Fante at his best. I mean, he is still on his way to becoming a master novelist, which I suspect I will relish in the next few novels of his I will pick up, including his first full novel, Wait Until Spring, Bandini! However, this will not disappoint and besides it's a pleasant and nice short read.

Fante nunca decepciona. Apr 26, Hamish rated it really liked it Shelves: This wasn't published until after Fante died, but I think it was written before Wait Until Spring, Bandini, which is constructed of a lot of the same raw materials.

His style is simple and straight-forward, but he can do so much with so little. He writes from the gut and that's where his work hits you. It's funny and painful because it's so human and universal, no This wasn't published until after Fante died, but I think it was written before Wait Until Spring, Bandini, which is constructed of a lot of the same raw materials.

It's funny and painful because it's so human and universal, no matter how specific his subject matter is. It's probably not his best, but it's still very good and a must-read for Fante fans. Jan 10, David rated it it was amazing. Never has a book been so bitterly sweet in it's successes. Mar 01, Juliano rated it it was amazing. Comparison with "The Catcher in the Rye" is inevitable, but its not a bad thing because " " is as good as the more famous one.

Maybe even more direct and sad.

Schitterend schrijver. Dec 09, Joseph Hirsch rated it it was amazing. This short, wonderfully written book follows the travails of Dominic Molise Fante's other alter ego, besides Arturo Bandini. Dom is in his late teens, and tired of living at home with his philandering brick mason of a father and his credulous aging wife, who thinks she spots the Virgin Mary in the backyard chicken house, from time to time.

Fante's humor, his energy, and passion make it feel as if he is in the room with the reader, describing the pains of growing up as a poor first generation It This short, wonderfully written book follows the travails of Dominic Molise Fante's other alter ego, besides Arturo Bandini. Fante's humor, his energy, and passion make it feel as if he is in the room with the reader, describing the pains of growing up as a poor first generation Italian-American in a small Colorado town. Dom's dream is to make it as a pitcher in the big leagues, and as from one moment to the next we watch his dreams get closer and then recede, we feel his pain, his desperation, his burning desire to be the equal of the WASP types in the town, who mock him with their wealth and privilege.

May Fante rest in peace and may his legacy continue to grow. As a postscript, I should add that this book was rejected by Fante's publisher, who returned the manuscript with a note, stating, "You've lost your touch, Mr. Quiere ser beisbolista.
